The design of the machine is a closely guarded secret, but even in appearance and open to the developers can understand that it used unprecedented design solutions. The main feature of “Armata” is an uninhabited tower: the crew is in a special armored capsule. “New technology has allowed to isolate people from ammunition and fuel, that is, with the defeat of the machine the likelihood of crew survival is very high, as bronekapsuly well protected from all sides,” explains Oleg Sienko.
The concept of the installation of 152-mm gun on the tank is not new, the attempted installation of this type guns were made in the mid-1980s, however, the technical complexity, excess capacity and the crisis in the country did not allow to fully implement such a task in Soviet times.
“Indeed, we do confirm that supplies have started. Totally, we are to produce 2,300 tanks of this kind for the Russian army”, Sienko told to RIA Novosti. “Speaking of the new contract, everything is up to the customer, the defense ministry. We just prepare manufacturing facilities”, he added.
According to the developers, “plate shields,” which are similar in appearance to the bars on metal bunk beds, will be installed along the perimeter of the machines. These shields will protect armored vehicles from cumulative grenades and anti-tank guided missiles — the most common threat to them in urban settings. The new shields are intended to deform the head of a grenade when it makes contact with the vehicle and divert part of the energy from the explosion.
— Will the “Armata” go into production in 2017?
— It is possible. But I want to stress that this machine is not for conscripts, and for the professionals that will absorb all the possibilities of this machine. Next year we plan to show in the dynamics at the arms exhibition in Nizhny Tagil. There we will show its capabilities in the dynamics and in shooting.
The armor of Russia’s all-new Armata tank can effectively withstand all existing means of antitank warfare, an expert in steel alloys said on Saturday.
