The CIA is blocking the release of information because the subject remains sensitive—both for the West and the Muslim world. In Washington, the CIA could come under fire if its own archives would confirm and fill out the current sketch view of history. For the Brotherhood, amid its current re-emergence as a major political force in Egypt and other countries, it would be extremely damaging to know that illustrious figures in its history were working for the country that most exemplifies the decadent, imperialist forces it has struggled against for decades.
Though religion has always played a central role in the make-up of Pushtun identity, Pushtun nationalism (especially in the 20th century) was always a more secular and left-leaning phenomenon. It still is.
This nationalism’s modern manifestation was founded on the thoughts and actions of Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan (Bacha Khan) and expressed through such left-wing parties as National Awami Party (NAP), Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP) and the Awami National Party (ANP).
Tensions are one again soaring along the contested “line of control” that runs through Kashmir, with Indian Army officials claiming to have launched raids into the side controlled by the Pakistani military to conduct “surgical strikes” against militants operating there, apparently getting into fights with the Pakistani troops.
In Kabul, a suicide bomber blew himself up near the U.S. Embassy and the NATO mission in Afghanistan. According to preliminary data from 10 to 30 people were killed and more than 320 were injured. Responsibility for the attack was taken by the Taliban.
