US lawmaker says she met Assad on secret Syria trip

A US congresswoman who made a recent secret trip to war-torn Syria said on Wednesday that she met with President Bashar al-Assad as part of her effort to end the almost six-year-long conflict.

House Democrat Tulsi Gabbard this month travelled to Damascus and the decimated city of Aleppo on a fact-finding mission, where she met with refugees, Syrian opposition leaders and relatives of fighters on both sides of the divide, in addition to Assad.

“As a member of the Armed Services and Foreign Affairs Committees, and as an individual committed to doing all she can to promote and work for peace, she felt it was important to meet with a number of individuals and groups including religious leaders, humanitarian workers, refugees and government and community leaders,” Latimer said in a statement.

She said she wouldn’t provide any additional details on the trip until Gabbard returns.
