T-14: the structure of the secret Russian tank

A Russian tank that changed the world weapons

T-14, better known as “Armata” – tank of the world’s only third post-war generation. Is a unique development of Russian experts, has no analogues abroad. It is noteworthy that all components in the new tank – simple, so that sanctions are not afraid of him.

The first Russian tank

Before the appearance of “Armata” in modern Russia was not his tank, after all, standing on the arms of the machine has come from the Soviet Union. More remarkable is the fact that the T-14 came up with and sent to the test team, whose average age is 30-40 years.
The development of the T-14 started in 2009 in the “Ural KB transport engineering”, which is part of the Corporation “Uralvagonzavod”. For the first time “Armata” was presented to the public at the Victory parade in Moscow in 2015.
Presentation of the new Russian tank has become a great event for the whole world. On the eve of the parade, many Western media has been arguing about the new product. So, Jane’s Defence Weekly noted that “armata” is a “fundamentally new design and represents the most significant change to the family military equipment of Russia since the 60-ies — 70-ies”. And The Telegraph, referring to the Russian experts assumed that “Armata” is able to leave behind the American Abrams, British Challenger and German Leopard.

What is the platform of “Armata”

T-14 is only one of the machines on the platform “Armata”. The platform itself is versatile and can be easily adapted to different weapon systems. It is possible, for example, set gun, anti-aircraft missile system or missile system “earth-earth”.

“We have a concept of the development of the machines on the platform “Armata”, consisting of 28 units of advanced weapons. — told in interview of RIA “news” the General Director of Uralvagonzavod Oleg Sienko. – They must be integrated into one platform: for air defense, heavy armored vehicles. Then there will be one kit, one set of spare parts (spare tools and accessories) to quickly change those or other components and assemblies”.

Also on the basis of “Armata” will be created fighting vehicle “Terminator-3”, whose predecessors, “Terminator 1 and Terminator 2” — are analogues of T-72 tanks and are only for export.

Invulnerable tank”invisible”

The design of the machine is a closely guarded secret, but even in appearance and open to the developers can understand that it used unprecedented design solutions. The main feature of “Armata” is an uninhabited tower: the crew is in a special armored capsule. “New technology has allowed to isolate people from ammunition and fuel, that is, with the defeat of the machine the likelihood of crew survival is very high, as bronekapsuly well protected from all sides,” explains Oleg Sienko.

The original silhouette combined with the use of special coating greatly reduces the visibility of the thermal machine and surveillance radar spectra. Armor “Armata” is able to withstand the ingress of any existing antitank weapons.

In addition, the “Armata” inherent duplication of any process. For example, the fire control system provides the ability to manually control the gun and make shots. “Armata” is resistant even to unexpected actions of the crew, – said Sienko. – The machine itself warns about the possible damage due to information management system”.
It is noteworthy that the tank is designed so that if suddenly there will be new weapons or a better host unit, they can be quickly integrated into the car. In UVZ emphasize that this possibility yet none tank in the world.

Weapons for a new war

T-14 became the world’s first tank, which fits in perfectly with the concept of “network-centric warfare”, that is intended primarily, not for single combat, and to work in a group of combat vehicles.
Network-centric warfare (from the English. Network-centric warfare) is a concept of war in which all combatants (command, military equipment, manpower, intelligence) are combined into a single information network. It allows you to sync steps to promptly obtain and bring to all participant information in real-time. The result – operational management of forces and means, the increase of rate of operations, efficiency defeat enemy forces.Network-centric warfare requires the active use of drones, precision weapons, well protected sustainable communication channels with high bandwidth electronic warfare. The first practical implementation of network-centric warfare in the late 90-ies of the last century began, the US armed forces.
In network-centric warfare the emphasis is on the effective operation of combat units, not individual machines. “This “new war” assumes that a tank duel no longer decide the outcome of the battle. Clash of the tank units withdrew to the background, replaced by the battle combined battle groups in which the tank is though very important but only one component order of battle, – says Deputy General Director of Uralvagonzavod Vyacheslav Khalitov. – It is necessary to create Autonomous, able to act independently of the combat modules, which would include family of combat and support vehicles. But it must be a single unit. Of course, to effectively implement the specified characteristics in the “Armata”, especially in the T-14 and a heavy infantry combat vehicle T-15, it is necessary to change the forms and methods of their use”.

After the appearance of “Armata” foreign manufacturers of military equipment are seriously engaged in similar developments. According to media reports, the German company Krauss-Maffei Wegmann and the French Nexter is preparing to create a joint venture for the production of land military equipment. Last year they said that in the near future will create a new tank which in the future will replace the French Leclerc and the German Leopard 2.

In UVZ skeptical of reports of attempts to catch up with Russian developers, because I think that was ahead of their foreign colleagues a minimum of ten years.

The German magazine Stern writes that the latest developments of Russian military-industrial complex will force the Western countries to hasten the modernization of the armies. According to the newspaper, the tank “Armata” T-14 is the first real innovation in Russia after the collapse of the Soviet Union. The “Armata” uses the best achievements of Russian tank — the tank is very fast and maneuverable.
