Today is the birthday of Baron Ungern-Sternberg. He was born in 1885. Shot by the Bolsheviks in 1921. The man is a legend. The man, the myth.

From early youth I am fascinated by the figure of the mad Baron Ungern-Sternberg. I have been collecting on any available information. Thousands of times lost episodes of his intense war drama short life. At the time of his death he was 36 years old. He did not know old age, decay, senescence. Piercing arrow sang its life, comes the most dramatic period in the history of 20th century Russia. And disappeared over the horizon to the exotic landscapes of Mongolia, Siberia, the Far East, where the Baron Ungern-Sternberg led a doomed war with the Reds even when lowered his hands and admitted defeat.Everything but him.

Ungern-Sternberg from his youth he lived only for war. And like a true warrior, he managed to get involved in a fight and get injured even in conditions of peaceful life. Since, however, lived his ancestors – the participants of the Crusades, and later switched to the service of the Russian Emperors and again fought, fought and fought. When we are dealing with a real warrior caste, the Hindus call them kṣatriyas, that’s how wars erupt. War born warriors.

The military is not just protecting the homeland or serve the king. They live by war, for them, war is life. And if there is no war, they will come up. Otherwise what’s the point of being a warrior?

Ungern-Sternberg was the archetypal warrior. He fought in duels, was torn in all military campaigns since the Russo-Japanese war. Was an uprising of the Mongols against China, but when the First world, rushed to the front. In part 34 of the Cossack regiment took an active part in the fighting on the Austrian front. Was wounded five times, but again, without waiting for the wounds heal, he found himself at the front in the midst of hostilities.

In 1917, Ungern-Sternberg is with his friend ataman Semenov on the Caucasian front. But as the country as a result of the February revolution began to fall apart, Ungern moved to the far East, together with ataman Semenov to form there national side.

Liberals and Bolsheviks, Ungern hated fiercely. For him there was only one oath – the oath to the Russian Tsar and the Russian Empire. And no matter how turned politician, – he was a real white officer, remained faithful to the king even when the king was no more, or when the king refused to be king. All betrayed, Ungern-Sternberg remained faithful. Everything was over circumstances, women Fedorovich Ungern-Sternberg spat on the circumstances, considering them to be beneath the dignity of a true officer and soldier.

Ungern-Sternberg was extremely cruel. Of his cruelty legends. But not because he was a sadist. It is well known that sadists and torturers, as a rule, are cowards. They can only make fun of the weak, tribal, broken people and only when they are not in danger. Ungern-Sternberg was the direct opposite: his cruelty to others was due to the fact that he was extremely cruel to himself. In this he was rather ascetic. He could not eat or sleep for days on end, giving himself – all his power, all his life one war.He planned and organized battle groups of everything that came across under a hand: the remnants of the Cossack troops, of the militia of the Buryat, Mongolian pastoralists. If people don’t want to fight for the Empire of the Tsar and the Christian Faith, Ungern-Sternberg drove them into operation by force. You never know what they think of themselves. The Bolsheviks and the liberals – the representatives of the world of a conspiracy of usurers, materialistic, maniacs and depraved mob. If you do not give them resolute fight on all fronts, they’ll jump in humanity and turn him into an obedient herd. They destroy the very idea of God, the Empire, the officer’s honor and dignity, will replace people with machines. Therefore, the last soldiers of the Empire, whoever they were – whether regular troops, Cossacks, a Eurasian ethnic groups, Buddhists, Muslims, or even an unknown person – there is only one to fight against the Bolshevik scum to the last drop of blood.

As the Baron Ungern-Sternberg, and do, continuing guerrilla war with the Reds, even when everyone, including his friend Semyonov, laid down their arms. All, not him.

I agree that my admiration for the Baron Ungern was too much youth drive, romanticism and idealism. But somehow, over time, with age and knowledge, his image does not tarnish and is not forgotten. What, in fact, he was a wonderful man.
